And yet, at the time of Amos, they were hardly acting like a “chosen people.” They were not only ignoring the words of the prophets, and breaking their vertical covenant with God, but they were oppressing the needy, and breaking their horizontal covenant to care for their fellow man. Despite these actions, they continued to offer sacrifices and to participate in the outward rituals of worship. The Lord hates hypocrisy and “empty devotion,” and sent a herdsman named Amos to call them to repentance.
